Admittedly, my first experience with henna was not a positive one. At the age of 7, my eldest son returned from the beach with a temporary tattoo I was unfamiliar with. Though it looked a few shades darker than his tanned skin-color, I could tell something was “off”.

After two weeks, the color remained and I began to notice him scratching the area frequently. Another week went by and I began seeing raised bumps, though the color had faded. The entire dragon shape was now clearly engulfed in a rash. That’s when we contacted the doctor. Eventually the area returned to normal after six weeks of medication and panic. It turned out, my son had a reaction from the combination of sun and chemicals in a toxic henna cone.

At the time, I knew nothing about dyes used in chemical cones to produce instant color. Now I do, and I vowed to teach others everything I know to prevent another mom from receiving the scare my family encountered.

During a community health fair, I met a henna artist who introduced me to the tradition and I fell in love. With countless hours of practice, apprenticeship, and a supportive business community, I began hosting henna workshops and providing henna services.
